Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has defended his support for political cooperation between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), emphasizing that his position is anchored solely on the need to secure tangible development gains for the people of Mombasa.
Speaking during the annual Governor’s Eid Baraza at Treasury Square on Friday, Governor Nassir delivered a passionate appeal for unity and a pragmatic approach to national politics, stating that Mombasa residents should not be left behind as the rest of the country advances.
“My support for cooperation between ODM and UDA is driven by one thing only — the well-being of the people of Mombasa,” he said to applause from local leaders, religious figures, and community members in attendance.
“There is absolutely no reason why our residents should remain on the sidelines of national development while others thrive. We too are Kenyans. We too pay taxes. And we too deserve our fair share,” the Governor added.
Governor Nassir emphasized that political differences must never become a barrier to progress and development, asserting that Mombasa must have a seat at the table where key national decisions are made.
“Politics must never stand in the way of progress,” he said. “For Mombasa to prosper, we must engage — not isolate. We must collaborate — not resist. Only then can we unlock the full potential of our people and our region.”
The Eid Baraza, a tradition in the coastal city, brought together residents from all walks of life to reflect on the values of unity, service, and community after the holy month of Ramadan.
Governor Nassir’s remarks come at a time when national political dynamics continue to evolve, with increasing calls for dialogue, inclusion, and bipartisan cooperation. His position places Mombasa firmly within the framework of national engagement — signaling a strategic shift aimed at ensuring the region reaps the benefits of national development initiatives.
The Governor concluded by calling on all leaders — regardless of political affiliation — to prioritize the needs of citizens above all else.
“We cannot afford to politic with the lives of our people. If cooperation delivers roads, jobs, hospitals, and dignity for Mombasa, then I will stand by it — without hesitation,” he declared.
