Governor Sakaja’s commitment to improving sports facilities in Nairobi

In the last two years, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has shown his commitment to the improvement and development of all sports facilities in Nairobi County.

This is one of Sakaja’s initiatives to support the youth of Nairobi in advancing their talents in sports.

Sakaja’s administration has committed to constructing new stadia as it continues to rehabilitate, maintain, and upgrade the current sports facilities in the City.

For instance, he delivered Dandora Stadium on March 8, 2024 after a delay of six years. The 4,000 sitting capacity facility features a play pitch equipped with an artificial turf, utility rooms constructed to international standards, floodlights, and a working drainage system.

The sports facility has enabled youth to have a platform to enhance, nurture, and improve their talents.

The Nairobi governor also unveiled Uhuru Complex Sports Arena, which boasts of a football pitch, a basketball court, and a convertible court, which can be used for netball, volleyball and handball.

It also has a multipurpose hall to host indoor games like chess, table tennis, among others sports.

A boxing ring is also available to host boxing matches at the Uhuru Complex Sports Arena. The facility gives opportunities to the youth to showcase their abilities in different sports disciplines.

According to Sakaja, Public schools have free access to the Sports Arena.

Other facilities earmarked for rehabilitation and construction include Kihumbui Stadium, whose construction was launched by Governor Sakaja this year.

Woodley Stadium construction will commence soon after the county confirmed acquisition of a new contractor and Joe Kadenge (formerly City Stadium) will be receiving a facelift too.

Other stadiums planned for construction are Ziwani, Githurai, and Mukuru.

To fulfil this commitment, Sakaja’s administration has started the process of reclaiming all grabbed land meant for expanding sports facilities.
