Governor Waiguru speaks after Woman Rep. was injured during chaos in a meeting

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has strongly condemned an incident that saw the county Woman Representative Njeri Maina attacked by rowdy youth during a meeting she had organised.

Njeri, a lawyer by profession, had accompanied her client – Baragwi MCA David Mathenge – to Kirinyaga Police headquarters to record a statement over allegations of vandalizing a county government water project at Mukandu-ini village last week.

However, chaos rocked with a clip shared online showing people running helter-skelter as two warring groups hurling projectiles at each other.

Speaking to the press while clutching her bleeding head, the lawmaker says that her meeting was disrupted by hired goons, citing political rivalry.

“Na watu lazima wapate haki yao ya maji. Kwa hivyo hata hao wenye wananigonga na hao wenye wametumana wananigonge nawajua,” she said.

‘We don’t condone violence’

Governor Waiguru now says that no matter the situation, violence is not condoned in Kirinyaga.

“It has come to my attention through the media that Kirinyaga Women Rep Hon Njeri Maina was attacked by youth while going to answer to police summons, together with Baragwi MCA Hon Mathenge, concerning the breakage of County Water Project on Saturday.

“I wish to condemn any acts of violence, and reiterate that, no matter the reason, we don’t condone or tolerate violence,” the governor says in a statement on her social media accounts.

Consequently, Waiguru wants police officers to immediately launch investigations and take action against the perpertrators of the violence.
