Governors to elect new CoG chair today: Will Ruto, Raila and Gachagua influence decide?

Governors are currently meeting at Safari Park, Nairobi, where among other things, they will elect the new leadership of the Council of Governors (CoG).

As per the programme, the governors will also consider the new health plan – Social Health Insurance, and its rollout.

The county bosses will voice their position on the health plan as well as the outgoing chairperson and governor for Kirinyaga Anne Waiguru, delivering the State of Nation Address.

Those in the contest for chairperson are; the current vice chair, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who is the only first time governor on the list of those who want the chair position.

Already, the race has taken the direction of two camps pitting embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against President William Ruto and Azimio-One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga.

Governor Kahiga, of UDA Party a close ally of DP Gachagua, is expected to battle with Wajir’s Abdullahi of ODM Party.

Previous CoG chairpersons are; Bomet’s Isaac Ruto (2013-2015), Meru’s Peter Munya (2015-2017), Turkana’s Josphat Nanok (2017-2019), Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparanya (2019-2021), Embu’s Martin Wambora (2021-2022) and now Waiguru (2022-2024).
