Gov’t dispells alarm over mass livestock vaccination drive

The government has dispelled claims that the planned national vaccination initiative has ulterior motives.

Dr. Christopher Wanga, director policy and research at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, insists all vaccines used globally have been tried and tested and therefore no cause for alarm.

Dr Wanga, speaking at the World Organization for Animal Health Continental Conference in Nairobi, insists the Government has taken proper measures to scrutinize all the vaccines that will be used, urging farmers to ignore negative reports circulating on planned livestock vaccination scheduled for 2025.

Dr. Wanga, representing Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Andrew Karanja, has reiterated the need for technological advancements in vaccine manufacturing to aid in better livestock management and production.

Deputy Director General at the World Organization for Animal Health Dr. François Caya says the veterinary profession globally faces a big challenge in manpower; thus, there is an urgent need for revision and modernization of the animal health curriculum.

The African Union, also present, has lauded ongoing efforts to ensure that vaccination for chronic animal outbreaks is achieved across the continent, especially in rural areas.

The two day event brings together over 175 stakeholders in the veterinary workforce to deliberate on a resilient veterinary workforce for Africa.
