Police in Rwizi Region, Uganda, have arrested a government official who allegedly raped a 20-year-old university student.
Atuhaire Adson, the Deputy LC5 Chairperson of Kiruhura District, was arrested on September 9 for allegedly raping the university student of Bishop Stuart University.
According to a report filed at Mbarara Police Station, it all started on September 8, 2023 at around 2 p.m.
On the fateful day, the local administrator reportedly exchanged contacts with the university student in Rwetondo, Kakoba ward within Mbarara City.
Shortly after, they decided to hang out together at a nearby Golden Leaf Bar. They were driving in a Toyota Premio, registration number UAT 238Q.
All hell breaks loose
Later that evening, Atuhaire called the alleged victim and offered to take her out for an evening.
“He picked her up from the hostel at Kakoba Kyapatoni cell, went and bought groceries and snacks,
“On their way back, the suspect took a different route and along the way, raped the victim,” the police report reads in part.
The matter was reported to the police, and the suspect was arrested.
His motor vehicle was also impounded, even as police launched investigations into the incident.
Uganda Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga has since cautioned young women against going out with strangers, especially when they are alone.
“The victim was particularly vulnerable, when the suspect took a different direction and raped her,” he says.
