The State Department for Sports, led by Principal Secretary Peter Tum, recently hosted Mohamed Mohamud, a Grade 6 pupil from Waranqara Primary and Junior School in Mandera, who is recognized for his exceptional skills in long jump, high jump, and long-distance running.
Mohamed secured second place nationally in the 2024 National Secondary School Competitions held in Nyeri, earning him a spot at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games in Uganda, where he won a bronze medal in the long jump.
PS Tum expressed confidence in the Ministry’s efforts to identify and nurture untapped athletic talent across Northern Kenya and other parts of the country.
The meeting was attended by Hon. Mohamed Abdikher, MP for Lafey Constituency; MCA Abdullahi Wariri of Waranqara Ward; Youth Leader Mahat Ali; and Talent Coach Mwalimu Khamis Tawane, among other leaders.
Meanwhile, Kakamega County has been selected to host the 2025 edition of the FEASSSA Games, marking Kenya’s first time hosting the event since 2016, when it was held in Eldoret. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 21st edition of the games at Bukedea Stadium, Uganda, on August 26.
FEASSSA President Justus Mugisha expressed confidence in Kenya’s ability to host a successful tournament, emphasizing the need to meet the high standards set by Uganda’s hosting of this year’s games.
“This year’s edition was special. The athletes competed on first-class facilities built for the games. Uganda has set a high standard in hosting these games, and Kenya has the task of raising the bar even higher,” Mugisha stated. The International School Sport Federation (ISF) President, Laurent Petrynka, also praised Uganda for its organization of the event.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen welcomed the decision to award Kenya the hosting rights for the 2025 FEASSSA Games in Kakamega County. He emphasized that this is a prime opportunity for Kenya to reclaim its top spot in regional sports. “We shall strive to ensure that our infrastructure supports the delivery of a world-class competition and facilitates early identification and development of talent,” noted Murkomen.
The 2025 FEASSSA Games in Kakamega are set to continue the tradition of fostering regional sportsmanship and showcasing young talent across East Africa.
