The Second Edition of the Mchana Open Pool Tournament is set to kick off on Thursday, December 13, 2024, with over 300 participants from 13 countries vying for glory. For the first time in the tournament’s history, a ladies’ category has been introduced, marking a significant step in promoting inclusivity in the sport.
The tournament, hosted in Kenya, has attracted 256 men and 62 women competitors from countries including South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Sweden, Portugal, Britain, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Sudan, Ghana, and Malawi. With a Ksh 4 million prize pool up for grabs, excitement is already building.
In the men’s singles, Uganda’s Ibrahim Ssembeja, the defending champion, will face fierce competition from his compatriot and in-form rival, Senzo Gumenza.
“I know all eyes are on me after winning last year’s edition, but I’m well-prepared to defend my title. I’m looking forward to a good tournament,” said Ssembeja.
On the women’s side, Patricia Keruche, a key player for Team Kenya Ladies, expressed her optimism about competing in the newly introduced ladies’ category.
“Apart from aiming for the prize money, we believe the tournament will give us confidence and great exposure,” said Keruche.
The winner of the men’s singles will take home a grand prize of Ksh 800,000, while the ladies’ singles champion will be rewarded with Ksh 260,000.
Efforts to Grow the Sport
Speaking during the pre-tournament briefing, Kenya Pool Billiard Federation Secretary-General Doreen Mwandia, who also serves as the African Vice Chair, highlighted the federation’s ongoing efforts to develop pool billiards in Kenya.
“We want to introduce more ladies and young players to the sport. We’re working towards incorporating pool in academies and schools. Currently, we have a bill before the Senate and are actively engaging counties to grow the sport,” said Mwandia.
Tournament Schedule and Finals
The competition will run from Thursday, December 13, to Sunday, December 15, 2024, with the winners being crowned on the final day
