Police have launched investigations after the body of a GSU officer was buried within a church compound in Opapo village, Migori County under unusual circumstances.
This was after constable Dan Ayoo Obura, based at the General Service Unit (GSU) headquarters in Nairobi, passed away on March 27 after a short illness while at home.
His body was buried the following day at a church compound in Opapo village.
According to his wife, Obura became sick while they were at home, and she decided to take him to the church for prayers.
However, he died before reaching the church at around 8 pm.
His wife obtained a burial permit the following day from the area assistant chief, who was reportedly not aware of the burial location.
The lady together with some church members who were armed with the burial permit proceeded to bury Obura within the church compound, citing religious beliefs.
However, a family member raised concerns and reported to the police, alleging that Obura had been radicalized by the church teachings.
In addition, the officer’s father also reported the matter to authorities, leading to a police visit to the church and launched investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that police are considering exhuming the body to conduct an autopsy and establish the exact cause of death.
Police have also disclosed plans of obtaining a court order for the exhumation.
