Nyanza County Governors Urge Deployment of GSU Officers to Kisumu-Kericho Border

Governors representing Nyanza counties have jointly called upon the government to deploy General Service Unit (GSU) officers to the troubled Kisumu-Kericho border region to restore order and peace.

In a unified statement, Governors Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), James Orengo (Siaya) and Ochilo Ayako (Migori) have urgently requested Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to take immediate action.

The Governors have expressed their dissatisfaction with the police’s efforts to maintain law and order in the area, claiming that officers from the Kericho side may not be impartial.

According to these county leaders, the attacks at the border have persisted since Wednesday night, resulting in the loss of lives and property among innocent Kenyans.

In addition to requesting enhanced security measures, they are demanding a swift resolution of the boundary dispute between the two counties, using legal and official government procedures.

Dr. Gregory Ganda, Kisumu County Health CEC, has reported six deaths and over ten injuries resulting from the ongoing clashes.

These incidents have disrupted learning activities in multiple schools situated on the border between Kisumu and Kericho, exacerbating the ongoing tensions.

Jacktone Gangre, the Nyakach Sub County Director of Education, has confirmed the closure of several schools near the border shared by the two communities.

These including Holo, Saka Ngege, Agai, Kibwon, Sondu Union primary schools, and Agai secondary school (both day and boarding).

Gangre revealed that they have advised school authorities to suspend learning until the situation stabilizes.

The government prioritizes the safety of students, pupils, and teaching staff and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Normal school activities will resume once the safety and security of the school community are guaranteed, he added.

Despite the heavy police presence and patrols, tension remains high along the common border of the two counties.

The intervention of GSU officers is hoped to quell the ongoing unrest and restore peace to the region.
