Germany’s men’s national team captain, Ilkay Gundogan, has officially announced his retirement from international football after earning 82 caps for his country.
Gundogan, 33, shared the news on social media, citing “a certain tiredness” both physically and mentally as the key factors behind his decision.
Debuting for the German national team against Belgium in October 2011, Gundogan missed out on Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory due to a back injury.
“After a few weeks of reflection, I have concluded that it is time to end my national team career,” Gundogan wrote on social media. “I look back with great pride on 82 international matches for my home country—a number that I could never have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011.”
The German Football Federation (DFB) expressed their gratitude towards Gundogan, stating, “We will miss you as our captain and teammate. As our friend, you always had a secure place in the team. Thank you for everything, Illy!”
Gundogan’s retirement follows the recent exits of fellow German stars Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller. Kroos retired after Euro 2024, while Müller called time on his international career last month.
Despite his international retirement, Gundogan remains active in club football. After winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in seven seasons with Manchester City, he moved to FC Barcelona last year. However, there is ongoing speculation that he may leave Barcelona this summer.
