Erling Haaland is on the verge of shattering a long-standing record held by Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester City prepares to kick off their 2024/25 Champions League campaign. The reigning Premier League champions will face Inter Milan at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, and all eyes will be on Haaland.
The Norwegian striker has been in sensational form this season, scoring nine goals in as many games. His latest display came over the weekend when he netted twice in City’s 2-1 victory over Brentford, maintaining Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten start to the season.
Although Haaland missed the chance to become the first Premier League player to score three consecutive hat-tricks in a row during the Brentford game, he did set a new milestone. The 23-year-old became the first player in Premier League history to score nine goals in the opening four matches of a season.
Haaland closing in on Ronaldo’s record
Haaland’s exceptional goal-scoring form presents him with another opportunity to rewrite the record books in Wednesday’s match against Inter Milan. The two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner is just one goal away from scoring his 100th goal for Manchester City. So far, he has found the net 99 times in just 103 appearances for the club.
Should Haaland score, he will surpass Ronaldo’s record of reaching 100 goals for Real Madrid in 105 games, according to Diario AS. If Haaland doesn’t score on Wednesday, he still has the chance to match Ronaldo’s feat in 105 games, but given his current form, Ronaldo might be watching from Saudi Arabia with concern.
If Haaland doesn’t hit the mark against Inter Milan, he could match or break Ronaldo’s record when Manchester City hosts Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
