Haitians tell off President Ruto on Kenya-led peace mission

Haitians living abroad have risen in protest against the Kenyan government.

The controversial decision to dispatch Kenyan police officers to aid in quelling the rampant gang violence that plagues the Caribbean nation.

The move by President William Ruto has drawn widespread criticism.

Many deeming it ill-advised and perilous for the Kenyan officers involved.

The United Nations Security Council, on Monday, passed a resolution endorsing a multinational security mission.

Led by Kenya’s national police service, to address the issue of gang-related violence in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital.

While acknowledging the necessity of intervention due to the Haitian National Police force being outgunned and underpaid.

Haitian locals have also voiced their condemnation of President Ruto’s decision.

Further, taking to the streets and directly addressing the President, along with chanting anti-Kenya slogans.

Videos circulated on social media show protesters carrying placards and Haitian flags, as they chant slogans like “William Ruto… US puppet… Kenya… shame on you!”

Some of the placards bear messages such as ‘Haiti Gangs armed by the USA’ and ‘US out of Haiti!’

Another placard singles out the current Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, with the words: “Ariel Henry, US appointed puppet.”

It’s worth noting that while the international community recognizes Henry, many ordinary Haitians do not consider him their legitimate leader.

Nyamu’s remarks

Karen Nyamu highlighted Kenya’s history of peacekeeping, citing its role in Somalia.

Similarly, she emphasized that the mission had the backing of the UN and other nations beyond Kenya.

The decision to send Kenyan officers to Haiti remains a contentious issue.

With Haitians abroad and locals expressing their concerns and dissatisfaction with the intervention.

As protests continue and global attention remains focused on this situation, the controversy surrounding President Ruto’s move shows no signs of abating.
