Halle Berry’s Oscars legacy: Historic win that feels lonely

Halle Berry made history in 2002.

Becoming the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Lead Actress for her powerful performance in Monster’s Ball.

More than two decades later, she remains the only Black actress to have claimed the honour—a reality she describes as both frustrating and lonely.

In a heartfelt conversation on Trevor Noah’s What Now? podcast.

Berry reflected on the weight of her win and how, even in that moment, she understood its significance beyond herself.

“I knew it was bigger than me,” she shared, emphasizing that the victory was meant to pave the way for others.

Yet, over 22 years later, no other Black woman has stood beside her in Oscar history.

While several Black actresses have triumphed in the Best Supporting Actress category, the lead category remains an unbroken barrier.

This year, Cynthia Erivo, nominated for her role in Wicked, carries the hopes of many, including Berry, who expressed her deep desire for change.

“I hope this year, someone stands next to me,” Berry said, her voice filled with both longing and hope. “Because I’m tired of occupying that space alone.”

Despite the years of disappointment, Berry remains proud of the moment that defined her career.

“I was chosen in that moment to be a beacon of possibility. And I do think it served that purpose,” she said, acknowledging the inspiration her win provided to aspiring actors.

Unforgetabble Berry speech

Her emotional acceptance speech in 2002, filled with tears and gratitude, remains one of the most unforgettable moments in Oscars history.

But Berry knows that true progress means she shouldn’t still be the only one.

As the world watches the upcoming Academy Awards, the question lingers.

Will 2024 finally be the year that breaks the cycle?

Berry, and many others, are hoping that the long-overdue change finally arrives.
