Harambee Starlets edge Tunisia to set up WAFCON decider against Gambia

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over Tunisia in their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier, securing a crucial place in the final round of qualification. Goalkeeper Lilian Awuor was the hero of the night, saving two penalties as Kenya held firm to progress to the next stage, where they will face Gambia in October for a spot in WAFCON 2026.

A Heroic Defensive Display

In a tense and high-stakes match in Tunisia, Kenya showed resilience and determination, holding off the hosts despite relentless pressure. The Starlets took an early lead through forward Tereza Engesha, who clinically finished in the first half to give Kenya the advantage.

Tunisia had multiple opportunities to equalize, but Lilian Awuor stood tall between the posts, producing two incredible penalty saves—one in each half—to deny the hosts a way back into the game. The Kenyan defense, marshaled by skipper Ruth Ingosi, remained solid throughout, frustrating Tunisia’s attacking efforts.

Match Statistics: Tunisia’s Missed Opportunities

Despite dominating possession, Tunisia failed to capitalize on their chances. The hosts registered 15 shots compared to Kenya’s five, but only four were on target. Two of their best opportunities came from the penalty spot, but Awuor’s heroics ensured Kenya’s slender lead remained intact.

Kenya, on the other hand, were clinical with their limited chances. Engesha’s early goal came from one of their two shots on target. The Starlets also forced Tunisia into defensive errors, winning several free kicks and corners.

Disciplinary Record

It was a highly physical match, with both teams committing numerous fouls. Tunisia received three yellow cards, while Kenya managed to keep their discipline, picking up just one caution. The referee had to intervene several times as Tunisia’s frustration grew, especially after their missed penalties.

What’s Next for Kenya?

With this victory, Kenya moves on to the final round of WAFCON 2026 qualifiers, where they will face Gambia in a two-legged tie. The first leg is scheduled for October 20th in Kenya, with the return leg set for October 28th in Gambia.

A win in this fixture would see the Harambee Starlets book a ticket to the 2026 WAFCON, marking a historic achievement for Kenyan women’s football. With their defense standing strong and a goalkeeper in top form, the Starlets will head into the next round with confidence and belief.
