Harambee Starlets wrap up Ivory Coast friendlies, focus shifts to WAFCON qualifiers

The Harambee Starlets concluded their April FIFA international window with two friendly matches against Ivory Coast’s Women’s National Team in Abidjan.

Although both games ended in 2-0 defeats, head coach Beldine Odemba has emphasized the importance of these high-profile fixtures as part of the team’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.

Speaking after the matches, Odemba highlighted the value of facing strong opponents like Ivory Coast. “These friendlies were important for us to gauge our current level, build consistency in the squad, and identify areas for improvement. Playing against strong sides helps us understand how best to prepare for what lies ahead,” she stated.

The Starlets retained much of the squad that triumphed over Tunisia in the first round of WAFCON qualifiers, with a few notable additions.

Vivian Nasaka, Ann Norah, Faith Mboya, and Lucy Kwekwe joined the team to bolster its depth and provide more options ahead of October’s decisive final qualifying round against Gambia.

Despite missing captain Dorcas Shikobe due to injury, Odemba expressed confidence in her squad’s ability to grow through exposure to quality opposition.

“We want to take advantage of every FIFA window and continue exposing our players to competitive matches. This is how we grow and prepare a team capable of competing at the highest level,” she added.

While the results against Ivory Coast were disappointing, they offered valuable lessons for the Starlets as they aim for their second-ever appearance at WAFCON, following their debut in 2016.

The team’s focus now shifts fully to October’s qualifiers against Gambia, where victory would secure their place in the continental tournament.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has reiterated its commitment to supporting the team by creating more opportunities for international exposure and enhancing player development.

These efforts are seen as crucial for preparing the Starlets not only for WAFCON but also for future competitions.

As preparations continue, Odemba remains optimistic about her team’s potential. “We’ve identified areas we need to work on, and we’ll use this time effectively to ensure we’re ready for Gambia,” she said.

The Starlets’ journey reflects their resilience and determination to elevate Kenyan women’s football on the continental stage. Fans will be eagerly watching as they aim to make history once again.
