Kenya’s dream of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains alive, and captain Michael Olunga is confident that the Harambee Stars can still make it. With crucial matches against Gambia and Gabon lined up this week, the team is determined to fight for six points and climb up the Group F standings.
Crucial Fixtures Ahead
Currently, Kenya sits fourth in Group F with five points, trailing leaders Ivory Coast by five. Their first challenge comes on Thursday when they face Gambia in Abidjan. This match is expected to be tough, as Gambia has grown into one of Africa’s strongest teams. However, Olunga and his teammates remain optimistic about securing a positive result.
The second fixture is set for Sunday, a historic moment for Kenya as they finally play a home game after four years. Gabon will be their opponent, and the team is eager to give their fans a thrilling performance. If the Harambee Stars win both matches and other results favor them, they could climb as high as second in the group.
Olunga’s Rallying Call
As the team departed for Abidjan, Olunga expressed his belief that qualification is still within reach. “We are looking forward to the next two fixtures, which will be very tough, but I believe the group is still open. We have a difficult match against Gambia, but we are ready to fight for victory,” he stated.
Speaking about their home fixture, he added, “Playing at home after four years is a huge motivation for us. We want to make our fans proud and give them something to celebrate.”
Gambia’s Familiar Face
Gambia is currently coached by Jonathan McKinstry, a man well-acquainted with Kenyan football. He previously managed Gor Mahia and led them to a league title. His knowledge of the Kenyan playing style could be an advantage for Gambia, but Olunga remains confident that Kenya can overcome the challenge.
New Coach, Fresh Start
Kenya’s new coach, Benni McCarthy, is stepping into his first competitive assignment with the team. The South African tactician, who was appointed recently, has had limited time to work with the squad. So far, he has only had three days of training with local-based players before linking up with the full team.
Despite the short preparation period, Olunga believes the team is adapting well. “We have to be patient as we adjust to a new playing style, but I am confident in this young Kenyan team. We are determined to give our best and start on a positive note under Coach McCarthy.”
Coach McCarthy’s Optimism
McCarthy, in his first address as coach, reassured fans that Kenya still has a good chance of making it to the World Cup. He promised to push the team hard in the remaining matches and urged fans to rally behind the squad.
As the Harambee Stars embark on this crucial journey, the hope of qualifying for the World Cup remains strong. With determination, teamwork, and a bit of luck, Kenya could still make history.
