Harambee Stars fall to Gabon in World Cup Qualifier, hopes dwindling

Kenya’s Harambee Stars suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Gabon in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday. The loss further dims their hopes of making it to the global tournament, as Gabon surged to the top of Group F with the crucial win.

Aubameyang’s Brace Sinks Kenya

Former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the star of the night, scoring both goals for Gabon. The experienced forward capitalized on Kenya’s defensive lapses to put his team in control of the game. Kenya’s captain, Michael Olunga, found the net in the second half, much to the delight of the packed Nyayo Stadium, but it was not enough to salvage a result for the hosts.

The defeat leaves Kenya in fourth place with six points, trailing leaders Gabon, who now have 15 points, followed closely by Ivory Coast with 13. However, Ivory Coast could reclaim the top spot if they defeat Burundi in their upcoming match.

McCarthy Remains Optimistic Despite Setback

Kenya’s Head Coach, Benni McCarthy, expressed pride in his players’ fighting spirit despite the loss. Speaking after the game, McCarthy admitted that he has not been with the team for long but was impressed by their determination.

“I’m very proud of their spirit… despite not being with them for long,” said McCarthy.

The South African tactician also shared his long-term strategy, revealing plans to scout for new talent at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations to strengthen the squad.

“Of course, I have to attend and bring in more quality players who will be competitive against players like Richard Odada. My hopes for the World Cup? I haven’t given up,” he stated.

Match Summary and Key Moments

The match started with both teams missing early chances. In the 2nd minute, Aubameyang failed to capitalize on a clearance error by Kenya’s goalkeeper Ian Otieno. Four minutes later, Olunga had a golden opportunity following a defensive mistake but was denied a penalty after minimal contact in the box.

Gabon took the lead in the 15th minute when Aubameyang slotted home after a defensive lapse, celebrating with his trademark front flip. Kenya thought they had equalized three minutes later when Olunga found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Richard Odada also missed a great chance in the 21st minute, curling his shot wide.

Before halftime, Olunga struck the post from a fine pass by Bajaber Mohammed, while William Lenkupae squandered a clear-cut chance. The first half ended 1-0 in favor of Gabon.

In the second half, Gabon was awarded a penalty in the 55th minute after Eric Ouma handled the ball in the box. Aubameyang converted the spot-kick with ease, sending Ian Otieno the wrong way to make it 2-0.

Kenya responded in the 70th minute when Ouma delivered a pinpoint cross that Olunga converted to reduce the deficit. The goal energized Kenya, prompting tactical changes as Jonah Ayunga and Duke Abuya were introduced to bolster the attack.

Despite dominating possession late in the game, Kenya failed to find an equalizer. Ayunga and Lenkupae missed crucial chances, while Masoud Juma was introduced in stoppage time but had little impact.

What Next for Kenya?

Kenya will now shift focus to their remaining World Cup qualifiers in September, where they will host Gambia and Seychelles. In October, they will travel to face Burundi and Ivory Coast, hoping to keep their qualification hopes alive.

To secure a direct World Cup spot, Kenya must win all four of their remaining matches or aim for a second-place finish to qualify for the inter-confederation playoffs. With tough fixtures ahead, McCarthy’s squad must regroup and improve to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
