Kenyans on the internet are filled with fury and disappointment over Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya’s actions.

He was arrested on Friday for attacking the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Malaha/Isongo Ward Peter Walunya Indimuli at a funeral in Mumias, Kakamega County.

Salasya however will not spend the weekend behind bars as he was released on a KSh50,000 cash bail pending arraignment on Tuesday next week.

Irked netizens expressed disappointment towards the youthful leader who is a first time legislator.

Dr Ekuru Aukot, Thirdway Alliance Party Leader, said, “He should be in jail and stripped off his position as Member of Parliament. He fails the integrity test prescribed in chapter 6 of CoK 2010.”

He was concurring with another tweep who described Salasya as an “embarrassment”.

“This guy is an absolute embarrassment to the people of his constituency and the whole country in general. He is a leader in our country. It just goes to show us the kind of people we elect to represent us, absolute thugs,” the tweep, Daniel Muli, wrote.

“Peter Salasya is a BIG SHAME to our nation. Very useless Honourable member,” Brian Peter commented.

“Former DCJ Nancy Baraza was discharged from duty for pinching someone nose. Mumias East MP Peter Salasya punched someone in public. Our laws are meant to protect certain individuals and punish other,” Abuga Makori added.

“Peter Salasya should learn to behave like an MP. How can you slap a person Infront of mourners?” Lexy Ondelee wrote.

Some Kenyans were curious whether the MP was using such stunts to attain popularity as he hinted at going for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat in 2027.

As has been witnessed with other elected leaders in the country, netizens said Salasya could easily be re-elected as his behaviour was not new in Kenya’s political scene.

“In this country we’ve crooks in the name of leaders, I won’t even be surprised if the people of Mumias gives him a 2nd term,” one tweep opined.

This is not the first time he has been featured attacking someone in public. He was caught up in a kerfuffle with supporters of Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa at a church service in November last year.

He was ejected swiftly from the event after his bodyguards shot in the air.

In December, Salasya was caught on the wrong side of the law after threatening a magistrate who ruled in favour of a businessman suing him for failing to refund KSh500,000.
