Kenyans have been urged to brace for widespread flooding as heavy rains continue to batter the country, bringing life to a standstill in some parts of Nairobi.
Streets are gradually turning into rivers, and estates are struggling with rising water levels, causing major disruptions for residents.
Motorists are facing mounting losses as vehicles become submerged or damaged, while repair shops see a surge in business. Commuters and pedestrians, however, deal with daily struggles just to get to their destinations.
On Monday, Mark Kirui, a 43 year old Embakasi resident, found himself stranded after his vehicle broke down in stagnant water.
In another incident, over 130 commuters were stuck at Nairobi’s Central Railway Station after the tracks to Syokimau SGR were deemed unsafe due to waterlogging.
Despite promises of alternative bus transport, many passengers were left waiting for hours with limited updates.
The situation is especially dangerous for residents of informal settlements. In areas like Mathare, flash floods pose life threatening risks.
Makeshift homes near the Nairobi River are particularly at risk, as the waterway, often choked with waste, tends to overflow during intense rains.
Many residents say they have no choice but to remain despite the risks. A 53 year old woman, who has lived in Mathare for 15 years, said, “I know the danger, but where can I go? This is my home.”
Weather experts are warning that the rains could grow even more intense. The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) has forecast rainfall between 50 and 200mm across several East African countries, including Kenya. Areas in the northeast and coastal regions are particularly at risk of flash flooding.
Authorities are urging communities in flood-prone zones to remain vigilant as the situation could worsen in the weeks ahead.
