Here is how much cash government awarded athletes for their Olympic achievement

The government of Kenya headed by President William Ruto has honored nine Olympic medalists with cash rewards for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympics.

In a ceremony that took place on Thursday 15th August 2024 at the Eldoret State Lodge President Ruto hosted Team Kenya for a celebratory breakfast.

Each Olympic gold medalist received a cash reward of Ksh 3 million, while silver medalists were awarded Ksh 2 million, and bronze medalists received Ksh 1 million each.

At a special ceremony hosted by President William Ruto at the Eldoret State Lodge, Kenya’s Olympic medalists were rewarded for their outstanding performances at the Paris Olympics.

The medalists honored include:

  • Beatrice Chebet: 2 Gold medals (10,000m and 5000m)
  • Faith Kipyegon: 1 Gold (1500m), 1 Silver (5000m)
  • Abraham Kibiwott: Bronze (3000m Steeplechase)
  • Mary Moraa: Bronze (800m)
  • Emmanuel Wanyonyi: Gold (800m)
  • Faith Cherotich: Bronze (3000m Steeplechase)
  • Benson Kipruto: Bronze (Marathon)
  • Ronald Kemwoi: Silver (5000m)
  • Helen Obiri: Bronze (Marathon)

Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet were the top earners at the event, receiving Ksh 5 million and Ksh 6 million respectively.

Kipyegon secured a gold medal in the 1500m and a silver in the 5000m, while Chebet triumphed with two gold medals in the 10,000m and 5000m races.

During the event, President Ruto directed Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen to ensure that the Sports Fund is exclusively used to support athletes in their daily training and preparations for international competitions.

The event featured a red carpet reception for all Team Kenya athletes and officials at the State Lodge. Team captain and three-time Olympic champion, Faith Kipyegon, symbolically returned the national flag to the President.

Kenya emerged as the top-performing African nation at the Paris Olympics, finishing 17th overall with a total of 11 medals, including 4 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze.
