High Court Advocate Shadrack Wambui has expressed deep concern over recent remarks made by President William Ruto regarding the judiciary, urging him to reflect on his comments and issue an apology.
Speaking during the demonstrations organized by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Wambui emphasized the serious consequences of Ruto’s remarks, particularly for young lawyers.
He maintained that the President’s statements amounted to “open defiance of court orders,” which not only undermined the judiciary but also had negative implications for all Kenyans.
“Young lawyers are already struggling to secure employment and establish their own law firms. The President’s open defiance of court orders is creating a sense of hopelessness and recklessness,” Wambui stated.
The Chairperson of Sheria Mtaani cautioned that these accusations against the judiciary could lead Kenyans to disregard the advice and services of lawyers. Over time, the advocate says this would erode respect for court orders and undermine the rule of law.
Wambui called on President Ruto to carefully consider his remarks and offer an apology, as they have generated a somber state of affairs in the country. He reminded the Head of State that he is “a creature of the constitution” and should thus demonstrate respect for it.
Members of The Young Bar Association echoed Wambui’s sentiments, cautioning that the President would eventually require the judiciary’s support. They emphasized that they would remember his actions in the future.
In early January, President William Ruto accused the judiciary of colluding with corrupt cartels to hinder his legacy projects. His comments, expressed during a burial in Nyandarua, have sparked reactions from various legal associations.
In a peaceful protest and march, participants carried banners denouncing the President’s statements while advocating for the preservation of an impartial judiciary that upholds democratic principles.
The demonstration commenced at the Supreme Court Grounds along City Hall Way, proceeding on Parliament Road towards the Office of the President.
