Australian field hockey player Tom Craig has been suspended for 12 months by Hockey Australia following his arrest in Paris for attempting to purchase cocaine during the 2024 Olympic Games.
The suspension, which took effect on September 9th, is a result of an investigation conducted by the sport’s governing body in Australia.
According to the Hockey Australia statement, Craig will serve six months of the suspension in full, while the remaining six months will be suspended contingent upon him meeting specific conduct and behavioral requirements.
Additionally, he is required to complete mandatory training and educational programs as part of the sanction.
The suspension prohibits Craig from participating in any match, competition, or event organized by Hockey Australia at any level.
This includes major tournaments such as the upcoming Hockey One League and FIH Pro League.
However, the 29-year-old remains eligible for selection to the 2025 national men’s squad, which is expected to be announced at the end of this year.
Hockey Australia emphasized that Craig’s welfare remains a priority and that they will support his rehabilitation during this period.
The player, who has represented Australia in over 100 matches and won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating, “I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions.”
The incident occurred on August 7th in central Paris, where Craig was arrested by French police for attempting to purchase cocaine.
After being detained, he appeared before a judge and was released with a criminal warning.
The suspension highlights the consequences of engaging in illegal activities, even during major sporting events.
It also underscores the importance of maintaining high standards of conduct and behavior among athletes, who serve as role models for aspiring sportspeople and the general public.
