Dozens of families in Kochia Ward, Rangwe Sub-County, Homa Bay County, were left homeless after a heavy windstorm, accompanied by torrential rains, ravaged several villages on Sunday March 23, 2025 at night.
Residents of Nyarut, Kombogo, and Lower Kowili spent the night in the cold, while others sought refuge in neighboring homes after strong winds tore off the roofs of their houses.
The storm left a trail of destruction, displacing families and damaging property.
According to Central Kochia Location Chief, Eucabeth Obila, the violent winds blew off the roofs of over 17 houses, forcing families to salvage what they could as the rains poured in.

She added that three churches were also destroyed in the storm.
“Household property worth an unknown amount was destroyed, and several crop farms were swept away by raging floods, leaving farmers empty-handed,” said Mrs. Obila.
The chief is now appealing to humanitarian organizations and the State Department of Disaster Management to step in and offer assistance to the affected families, many of whom are now struggling to find shelter.
The disaster has left the community in distress, with urgent calls for relief aid, including food, shelter, and essential supplies for the displaced families.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as heavy rains continue to be experienced in the region.
