In a profound and unprecedented move, Howard University in Washington, D.C., announced the revocation of the honorary degree awarded to Sean Combs, also known as Diddy.
This decision came after a disturbing video surfaced, showing Diddy physically assaulting his former girlfriend, Casandra ‘Cassie’ Ventura, in a hotel hallway in 2016.
Howard University honoured Diddy, once a student who left before graduating, with an honorary doctorate in 2014.
The recognition celebrated his contributions to the music industry and his philanthropic efforts.
However, the emergence of the video, which the university deemed a major breach of its core values.
It led to a unanimous decision by the Board of Trustees to rescind this honour.
On Friday, a statement on Howard University’s website revealed the Board’s decision. It read, in part,
“The Howard University Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to accept the return by Mr. Sean Combs of the honorary degree conferred upon him in 2014.
The acceptance revokes all honours and privileges associated with the degree.
Accordingly, the Board has directed the removal of his name from all documents listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University.
In addition to revoking the degree, the university decided to terminate a 2016 gift agreement with Combs.
Further, disband the scholarship program established in his name, and return his $1 million contribution.

The statement further noted, “The Board has also directed the university administration to immediately take the following actions: terminate a 2016 gift agreement with Combs, disband the scholarship program in his name, return his $1 million contribution, and terminate a 2023 pledge agreement with the Sean Combs Foundation.
No payments towards the $1 million pledge have been due or made by the Sean Combs Foundation.
As of this date; therefore, no funds are due to be returned under the 2023 pledge agreement.”
The university’s actions highlighted its firm stance against interpersonal violence.
Stating that Diddy’s behaviour in the video was “fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs.”
The statement concluded, “The university is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence. The board and university administration have no further comment on this matter.”
This decision by Howard University marks a significant moment, reflecting the institution’s commitment to upholding its values and setting a powerful example of accountability.
While the university acknowledges Diddy’s past contributions, his recent actions prompted a clear and decisive response, ensuring that Howard University’s honour and respect remain untarnished.
