HSBC 7s playoffs: Coach Wambua includes Mwamba RFC’s Brian Mutua in his Shujaa Squad

The Kenya national men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, is in Madrid ahead of the HSBC 7s playoffs scheduled for May 31st to June 2nd.

Shujaa’s coach, Kevin Wambua, named Victor Onyala and Tony Omondi as co-captains in the 13-man squad, which includes Mwamba RFC’s instrumental player, Brian Mutua.

The team has been in camp in Marimas France while preparing for the play offs as well as the upcoming Olympic games.

Shujaa qualified for the playoffs after dominating major challenger series’ this year.

Shujaa are on a campaign to get a coveted core team spot on the World Rugby Sevens Series circuit. Kenya was relegated from the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series last year and have consistently displayed hunger to get back.

Their fine run started during the Dubai 7s leg in January where they were crowned champions. They would then settle for bronze in Montevideo before finishing fifth in Germany.

Four teams from this playoff will qualify for the 2025 HSBC SVNS, slated to begin later this year.
