Huawei and JKUAT empower 100 female STEM students on Girls in ICT Day

To commemorate International Girls in ICT Day 2025, Huawei, in collaboration with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), hosted an inspiring upskilling and mentorship event for 100 female students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Themed “Bridging the Digital Divide through Leadership and Innovation,” the event is part of Huawei’s global Women in Tech campaign, aligning with this year’s emphasis on empowering women for leadership roles in the digital sector.

Faith Mueni Kimanzi, an IP Solutions Architect at Huawei Kenya, emphasized the importance of supporting young women at every step of their tech journey, saying, “They’re not just the future of technology they’re shaping it now.”

The event included interactive sessions with ICT professionals, practical insights into tech careers, and the distribution of Huawei Cloud Certification vouchers key credentials for aspiring cloud professionals.

Prof. Catherine Kunyanga from the University of Nairobi called on young women to view technology not just as a career, but as a platform for social transformation.

She pointed out that the persistent gender gap in STEM is fueled by early exposure gaps, cultural expectations, and limited access to female role models challenges that are especially acute in rural communities.

Over 3,000 students took part in this year’s Huawei ICT Competition in Kenya, with 32% being female; five of them have qualified for the Regional Finals in South Africa.

Huawei’s Program Coordinator, Eric Munene, highlighted ongoing efforts such as the Management Trainee Program, ICT Academy partnerships, and university job fairs aimed at building stronger career pathways for Women in Tech.

Additionally, Dr. Esther Wanjiku noted that Huawei is also focusing on younger learners through initiatives like DigiSchool and the mobile Huawei DigiTruck, which has already trained over 6,000 Kenyans in digital skills.

These efforts show that Huawei isn’t just opening doors to tech they’re preparing young women to lead in it.
