I’ll leave as free agent end of season – Kylian Mbappe tells PSG

SportsWORLD

Kylian Mbappe is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this season, he has informed the club.

Reports suggest that Mbappe is leaning towards a move to Real Madrid once his PSG contract expires. However, key members of the 24-year-old’s circle remain unconvinced by the offer from the Spanish club, leading to delays in the process.

PSG received a €300 million bid for the France international from Al Hilal during the summer transfer window. Although the Saudi Pro League club was granted permission to negotiate with the forward, Mbappe ultimately stayed at PSG.

Despite signing a new two-year contract in the summer of 2021, which included a clause for a 12-month extension into the 2024-25 season, only Mbappe could activate this extension, not PSG.

The deadline for triggering the extension passed on July 31 last year. Madrid president Florentino Perez has been personally involved in discussions with the former Monaco man.

Perez has spearheaded the La Liga side’s pursuit of the player who rejected them two years ago, despite initial confidence from Madrid that Mbappe had agreed to the move.

Mbappe joined PSG from Monaco in the summer of 2017 for a fee of €180 million. During his six-and-a-half years at the club, he has scored 243 goals in 290 appearances across all competitions.

In the current season, he has featured 30 times for PSG, scoring 31 goals, including one in their 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the Champions League knockout phase on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
