I will continue working closely with Kenya Kwanza, even if the Democratic Party (DP) exits the ruling coalition, this is according to Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku.
MP Ruku, the only MP to be elected into office in 2022 on a DP ticket, says that the decision by the party to exit President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Coalition is not legally binding to him.
In any case, the legislator says that the party did not consult members before making the decision to exit the coalition.
“It is true that Democratic Party (DP) has written to Registrar of Political Parties and wants to leave the Kenya Kwanza Coalition. It is the officials of the party who did that,” MP Ruku said in an interview with TV47 on Wednesday, March 19. “Personally, I am a NEC member of the Democratic Party but I can’t remember attending such a meeting where we discussed that the party is going to pull out of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.”
‘A game of hard decisions’
Ruku says that politics is a game of making hard — sometimes unpopular — decisions, insisting he will not be leaving the ruling coalition. “So, that is not a decision which I can say it is binding to me. From where I sit, I will continue working closely with the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.”
The letter was copied to the Registrar of Political Parties, and the secretary generals for Ford Kenya, United Democratic Alliance and Maendeleo Chap Chap.
DP, associated with Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, last week wrote to the Kenya Kwanza secretariat, issuing a 30-day notice for leaving the coalition.
“Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments,” the letter, signed by the party Secretary General Jacob Haji and Chairman Esau Kioni, read in part.
Troubled CS Muturi
Muturi resigned as DP’s party leader in October 2022 to take up the role of Attorney General is President Ruto’s first Cabinet. In August 2024 after the Gen Z protests that prompted Ruto to reshuffle his Cabinet, Muturi was appointed to be the CS for Public Service and Human Capital Development.
Ever since then, Muturi’s relationship with President Ruto has took a turn for the worse. Earlier this year, CS Muturi condemned the government over what he said were abductions carried out by State agents. His son was a victim of one such abduction.
