Ian Mwangi: The Kenyan cycling from Egypt to South Africa

A Kenyan has embarked on riding a bicycle from Egypt to South Africa to support the education of bright students from poor backgrounds.

Ian Mwangi left for Mombasa Monday, November 25 after arriving in the country from Cairo on Saturday, November 23. The journey will cover 10,800 kilometers.

“Already we have covered 3,500 kilometres. Riding from Egypt through Ethiopia has been challenging because of harassment by the police in Egypt and fears of insecurity in Ethiopia. The remaining part is easy,” he said at Sultan Hamud in Makueni County.

Mwangi expects to raise KSh100 million which will go towards supporting 50 boys and 50 girls at Starehe Boys School and Starehe Girls School in perpetuity.

“The money that we collect will be invested and the schools will live off the interests. So there will always be a place for a needy student in the Starehe schools forever,” Mwangi added.

According to Nzioki Makau, the president of an association of old students at the Starehe schools, it takes a million shillings to sponsor a student at Starehe schools in perpetuity.
