Police Inspector General Japhet Koome on Tuesday June 18, 2024 held a meeting with a delegation of senior police officers from Haiti in Nairobi, over the planned deployment of 1000 Kenya police officers to Haiti.
IG Koome welcomed the delegation from Haiti at the National Police Service headquarters in Nairobi.
During the meeting, IG Koome reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to leading the Multilateral Security Support Mission (MSSM) to Haiti, an initiative backed by the United Nations to address the severe security crisis in the Caribbean nation.
The mission, authorized for an initial period of one year, aims to support the Haitian National Police in tackling gang violence and restoring stability.
Kenya’s parliament approved the deployment of 1,000 police officers, despite legal challenges and public debate regarding the mission’s constitutionality and potential risks.
“NPS remains committed to collaboration in the mission, for the good of the people of Haiti, especially women and children”, IG Koome assured the Haitian Police team.
He praised the collaboration between Kenya and Haiti, emphasizing that it would be instrumental in restoring law and order in the Caribbean nation.
We are counting on your support”, said the Haitian Police official Joachim Prohete during the meeting.
IG Koome in turn, assured the Haitian Police that “NPS remains committed to collaboration in the mission, for the good of the people of Haiti especially women and children”.
The meeting was also attended by DIG Kenya Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, and DIG Administration Police Service, Mr. Noor Gabow, who is the lead NPS Officer on the Haiti Mission.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto and other officials have emphasized the country’s duty to contribute to international peace and security, with the mission seen as enhancing Kenya’s global standing and providing valuable training for its police forces.
