Igembe South MP John Mwirigi has now revealed that he still uses the car he was gifted by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.
Speaking during an interview on Radio47’s Maskani47 with Billy Miya and Mbaruk Mwalimu, Mwirigi has said that he will never get rid of the Toyota Prado.
“Hio gari ni ya kukumbuka Uhuru Kenyatta, bado huwa inatumika hadi sasa (That car is to remember Uhuru Kenyatta, it is still used until now),” Mwirigi said.
Uhuru gifted Mwirigi the vehicle after the then 23-year-old lawmaker won the elections with a massive 76% of the total votes after traversing his constituency on foot during his campaigns.
Additionally, Mwirigi boarded a matatu to Nairobi for his first day in Parliament when he was sworn in.
However, in April 2022, Mwirigi threatened to return the gift after claiming that former Agriculture CS Peter Munya was using it to blackmail him to support Raila Odinga during the 2022 General Elections.
In a long post shared on his Facebook account, John Mwirigi, an ally of President William Ruto said that even though he was grateful of the gift, he was willing to give it back for the peace of his mind.
“Let me thank His Excellency the President for gifting me a car in the year 2017. I am much humbled now as I was then. Secondly, I wish to appreciate the President for gifting me wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return.
“If at all CS Munya is speaking for the president, (since he has done this repeatedly on different occasions), I may, for the sake of my peace of mind and independence, consider returning the gift,” Mwirigi said.
