Ijara Member of Parliament, Abdi Ali Abdi, had announced that the constituency’s Constituency Development Fund (CDF) will allocate up to KSh7.2 million annually to sponsor teacher-trainee students.
Speaking at Garissa Teachers Training College during a meeting with students from his constituency, the MP expressed concern about the severe shortage of teachers in the region, attributing it to the mass exodus of teachers due to security concerns.
To address this issue, the constituency has decided to invest in sponsoring at least 100 students per year to become teachers.
The MP aims to deploy about 300 teachers to address the current staff shortage in schools within the constituency within three years.
He emphasized the importance of the teacher trainees’ hard work to ensure the success of this initiative. The sponsorship has already led to increased enrollment in teaching courses, attracting more students to pursue a career in education.
The MP acknowledged the significant contribution of non-local teachers in the region but emphasized the need for sustainable local solutions to the teacher shortage.
