Impeached DP Rigathi Gachagua skips Mashujaa Day celebrations

Impeached  Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday October 20, 2024 skipped the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations that were held in Kwale County.

In a statement, Gachagua wished the country well as he skipped the national event despite reports saying he would attend.

“Happy Mashujaa Day dear Kenyans. God Bless our Nation,” Gachagua posted on X.

This comes a few days after he was impeached by the National Assembly and impeachment upheld by the Senate.

For instance, Senators voted to uphold five charges against Gachagua.

The charges approved by Senators included ground one of shareholding, ground four of undermining the Independence of Judges, ground five of the National Cohesion and Integrity Act 4, ground six of crimes under the National Cohesion Act and ground nine of gross misconduct (Public Attacks to NIS).

Meanwhile, the motion of impeachment was tabled in the National Assembly by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.

A total of 281 MPs voted in favour of the ouster motion against 44 who voted to save his political career as one MP abstained from voting.

Before impeachment, Gachagua’s lawyers said he had fallen ill and was admitted at the Karen hospital.

In addition, his doctor said he was stable but needed to be on bed rest for between 48 to 72 hours.

However, Gachagua filed a case in court, seeking to overturn the impeachment.

According to the impeached deputy president, he was not accorded a fair hearing at the Senate since he was not present to defend himself.

Following the impeachment, President Ruto nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as Kenya’s deputy president.

Kindiki’s nomination was unanimously approved by the National Assembly.
