Indian and Kenyan arrested for conning KSh1.1M in vehicle importation scam

Detectives from DCI Kilimani have arrested two suspected fraudsters accused of swindling a Kenyan out of KSh1.1 million in a vehicle importation scam.

The incident, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says, dates back to May 27, 2022, when Yunus Hamza Hussein, masquerading as a savvy salesperson at Rana Motors along Ngong Road, duped an unsuspecting victim with promises of delivering two vehicles, a Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace 7L for KSh2.9 million.

Enticed by the offer, the victim paid a hefty deposit of KSh1.1 million, only for the fraudster to vanish into thin air.

“Thanks to forensic intelligence, detectives trailed Hussein to his hideout at Crystal Apartments in Athi River, where several SIM cards were seized. Hussein further led detectives to his accomplice, Brian Omweri, in Makongeni, Thika where they recovered a SIM card linked to a Sh550,000 payment from the victim,” the DCI says.

The suspects are in custody awaiting arraignment.
