British actor Idris Elba has revealed plans to relocate to Africa within the next decade to support the continent’s growing film industry. The 52-year-old, best known for his work as an action movie star is working on establishing film studios in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Accra, Ghana, as part of his commitment to African cinema.
Born in London to a Ghanaian mother and a Sierra Leonean father, Elba feels a deep connection to Africa and believes that Africans must take control of telling their own stories. In an interview during an industry meeting in Accra, he confirmed his intention to settle in Africa, stating, “In the next five, 10 years, God willing… I won’t be able to [support the industry] from overseas. I need to be in-country, on the continent.”
Although he plans to live across different regions, including Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar, Elba envisions a film made in his studio in Accra. His broader goal is for African filmmakers to lead in storytelling and areas like financing, distribution, and marketing. He aims to shift the narrative about Africa, moving beyond portrayals of trauma and showcasing the continent’s rich culture, traditions, and diversity.
Idris, who portrayed Nelson Mandela in Long Walk to Freedom (2013), sees Africa’s film industry as a powerful tool for soft power. Despite the talent present in countries like Nigeria, known for its prolific Nollywood industry, Elba highlights the need for better facilities and infrastructure.
A 2022 UNESCO report supports his claims, noting issues like piracy and limited training. Elba believes that with the right support from governments and institutions, Africa’s film industry can thrive, helping Africans see reflections of themselves and their stories on the global stage.
