Intense, eye-opening Mount Kenya University Research and Innovation week concludes

The Mount Kenya University (MKU) Research and Innovation Week 2024 is concluding today, culminating five days of intense and eye-opening talks and symposiums, organised by different faculties of the institution.

This year’s innovation week, themed “Research and Innovation for Sustainable Production and Livelihoods”, kicked off Monday, October 14, with a symposium for the college of Health Sciences.

Prof Davide Mosca of the International Organisation for Migration delivered a keynote address focused on implications of public health, research and practice.

Dr Willis Akhwale, a former presidential adviser and chair Ministerial Taskforce on COVID-19, also gave an insight on how to tackle pandemic occurrences by reflecting on the past, the present and how we can prepare for the future.

On the second day, the School of Pharmacy delved into the topic: Pharmacy Research in Health Care and Manufacturing towards Achieving International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Goals. Prof. Calvin Andeve of the United States International University – Africa was the key note speaker.

Thereafter, the School of Pure and Applied Sciences undertook a symposium themed ‘Sustainable Chemistry’, with Kenyatta University’s Josephine E. Mwihaki delivering the keynote address.

Elon Musk once said that artificial intelligence (AI) will take all our jobs and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. AI technology is indeed transforming every walk of life.

For this reason, Day Three of the MKU innovation week organised discussions majoring on assessing how AI has affected our social life. Different speakers, led by Allan Cheboi – Co-Founder, Center for Information and Data Analysis (CIDA), talked about the opportunities, challenges and ethical considerations of AI in the 21-Century.

Students and different stakeholders convening at the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre also benefitted from a symposium organised by the School of Education.

The symposium focused on Research in Education Reform, and the implications of Competency Based Curriculum on higher education. Dr. Jane Gatua, a Quality Assurance Officer at the Ministry of Education, shared critical insights in that field.

On Day Four, the School of Business and Economics had a field day, organising a symposium that gave important insights on sustainable business practices that will realise social economic development.

Constant Wamayuyi, an economist at the National Assembly of Kenya, participated in the discussions that also included a question and answer session.

Today, different stakeholders will have the opportunity to showcase the innovations, complete with an exhibition competition. The closing ceremony of the MKU Research and Innovation week will see the awarding of prizes for winners of the exhibition competition, before remarks by Dr. Mercyline Kamande the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics and Research Affairs and Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi.
