The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of Mr. Rex Kanyike Masai, and the injuring of several others during the mass protests against the proposed Finance Bill, 2024.
IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori says the authority has established contact with the family of the deceased and is documenting the circumstances surrounding his death.
The shooting incident which occurred on June 20 around 7 pm along Moi Avenue was captured in an aerial video depicting the moment the victim was shot.
The authority emphasizes that the National Police Service Act and standing orders dictate that the use of force by officers must be proportional to the objective, the seriousness of the offense, and the resistance of the person.
The investigation team has commenced monitoring and investigating the policing operations that occurred during the largely peaceful demonstrations, as acknowledged by IPOA.
Additionally, IPOA called for continued restraint by the police and for the public to conduct themselves lawfully.
Makori conveyed the Authority’s condolences to Rex Masai’s family.
