Isaac Mutuma sworn in as Meru governor

Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, who has served as the deputy governor of Meru County since August 2022 has been sworn in as Meru Governor.

Mutuma was sworn in on Monday March 17, 2025 at Mwendantu Grounds, in an event that was attended by residents, several leaders from Meru County and other parts of the country.

This follows the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza by the Senate in 2024, which was upheld by the High Court on March 14, 2025.

Speaking after the swearing in ceremony, Meru leaders said the first main task for Mutuma was to unite Meru County, which has been rocked by unending battles since the election of Mwangaza in the 2022 general elections.

“Hon. Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia will rebuild the fallen walls of Meru just like Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in the bible. I urge fellow leaders in Meru County to support him in his quest to make Meru great again,” stated former Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi.

Majority Whip Jim Muchui had earlier noted that the Ameru have suffered due to lack of leadership and stability.

“For the last two years Meru has been divided. His first responsibility is to see how he can unite the people of Meru and the leadership,” said Muchui.

Meanwhile, 26 senators voted to impeach Mwangaza on August 21, 2024 on charges including gross misconduct and violation of the constitution and other laws. 14 senators abstained, while four voted in her favour.
