Isaac Mutuma to be sworn in as Meru Governor after court’s ruling on Kawira Mwangaza impeachment

Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia will on Monday, March 17, 2025 sworn in as Governor, following High Court’s ruling that upheld Senate’s decision to impeach Kawira Mwangaza.

In a gazette notice dated March 14, 2025, Mutuma will be sworn in as the fourth governor of Meru at Mwendantu Grounds starting 8:30 am.

“…it is notified for information of the general public that the swearing-in ceremony of Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, as the Governor of Meru County, shall take place on Monday, 17th March, 2025, at Mwendantu Grounds, starting at 8.30 a.m.,” the Gazette Notice from the committee chairperson Martin Gitije reads.

The High Court on Friday, March 14, while affirming Kawira’s impeachment, ruled that the Senate acted in accordance with the Constitution in her impeachment process.

“The amended petition dated December 23, 2024, has not met the required legal threshold for this court to disturb the decision of the Senate,” Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled while dismissing Mwangaza’s petition. “The gazette notice dated August 20, 2024, issued by the Senate communicating the decision to remove the petitioner from office as the governor of Meru, the impeachment is affirmed.”

Mwangaza had challenged her removal from office by way of impeachment, arguing that the process violated several procedures, did not undergo a public participation process, and that she was not accorded a fair hearing.
