Isiolo Woman Representative Mumina Bonaya has strongly defended President William Ruto’s partnership with ODM leader Raila Odinga, dismissing claims that the alliance has weakened opposition politics in Kenya.
Speaking during International Women’s Day celebrations at Isiolo Girls National School on Saturday March 8, 2025, Bonaya asserted that the country’s oversight institutions, including Parliament and the Senate, are capable of holding the government accountable, even in the absence of a vocal opposition leader like Raila.
Bonaya, who was at the school to donate a van, used the occasion to advocate for gender equality in politics, urging society to offer women equal opportunities, especially in leadership roles.
The legislator also announced ambitious plans to elevate Isiolo Girls National School into a center of excellence, positioning it as a top institution for girls from northern Kenya.
She dismissed critics accusing her of leveraging education development for political mileage, stating that her mandate includes improving education infrastructure and supporting academic growth.
“I am committed to ensuring that Isiolo Girls achieves academic excellence. We have invested in infrastructure and other learning facilities, and I expect even better performance from our students,” she said.
Bonaya also urged parents to have confidence in local schools instead of sending their children to institutions outside Isiolo County. “Our schools are offering quality education, just like those in other regions. It’s time we trusted and built our own institutions,” she urged.
In addition, the MP raised concern over the rising school fee arrears at Isiolo Girls, revealing that students owed the institution over Ksh. 10 million in unpaid fees.
She called on parents to prioritize clearing the outstanding balances to ensure smooth learning for all students.
Bonaya’s remarks come at a time when the government continues to push for inclusive education and women’s empowerment, with leaders like her taking the lead in advocating for equal opportunities and improved access to education.
