Israel declares state of war after Hamas launched surprise attack

Israel on Saturday, October 7, declared a state of war after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack as rockets were fired towards the country from Gaza strip.

One woman was killed and more than 100 people were serious injured during the Saturday morning attack.

Consequently, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared war as he called for an emergency meeting of the country’s top security leaders.

According to the New York Times, dozens of Hamas militants had crossed over to Israel as the Israeli defence forces responded in readiness for war.

The attack on Israel came as a surprise, as Israeli forces reported that the attackers had crossed the border into Israeli territory at different points.

“A number of terrorists have infiltrated into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. Residents in the area surrounding the Gaza Strip have been asked to stay in their homes,” the Israel Defence Forces posted on X account, formerly known as Twitter.

Loud sirens were heard across the south of Israel and Tel Aviv as Hamas militants fired rockets from Gaza strip towards Israel.

The attack was described as one of the biggest attacks in many years, according to the country’s military sources. 

As a result, the Israeli military has vowed to teach the Hamas terrorists a lesson they will never forget.

At the same time, the Israeli defense minister declared a special security situation of Israeli areas within a 50-mile radius of the Gaza Strip. The police have intensified patrols and set up roadblocks.

Several images and short videos circulating on social media show thick plumes of smoke as firefighters battle the flames in affected cities of Israel.

Palestinian militant Islamist group, Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The leader of the Islamic militant organization Muhammad Deif, noted in a recorded statement that the group decided to attack Israel so that their enemy could understand that their rampaging was over.
