Issuance of Maisha Cards to resume immediately, PS Bitok says

The Kenya Kwanza Government has welcomed the High Court decision that lifted an order issued on December 5 2023 barring the roll out of the new digital IDs (Maisha Card).

Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Julius Bitok says the Friday, February 23 high court ruling is a welcome reprieve to over 600,000 Kenyans who had unsuccessfully applied for new and duplicate ID cards.

“The High Court decision is a welcome reprieve to the over 600,000 Kenyans whose applications for new and duplicate ID cards could not be processed to fruition in adherence to the Court order,” PS Bitok says.

While announcing that isuance of Maisha Cards will resume immediately, PS Bitok thanked Kenyans who exhibited patience for the duration of the court order.

“We assure all persons with pending applications that we will expeditiously produce IDs on first-in-first-out basis beginning immediately,” PS Bitok adds.

The State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services has committed to continue implementing much-needed reforms to the Kenya National Identity ecosystem in a manner that respects the Constitution, in tandem with the rights and interests of all citizens.
