“It is well!” – Gachagua breaks silence after impeachment

Embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly responded following his impeachment by the National Assembly on Tuesday night, marking a significant event in Kenya’s political history.

In a series of posts on his social media accounts, Gachagua expressed his sentiments with a message of resilience, stating, “It shall be well.”

He reinforced his message by quoting two Bible verses, drawing from 1 Thessalonians and Jeremiah.

One verse encourages gratitude in all circumstances: “1 Thessalonians 5:18: Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

The other verse, from Jeremiah, speaks of thanksgiving and honor: “Jeremiah 30:19: From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained. It is well.”

On Tuesday, Gachagua faced a decisive vote in the National Assembly, where 281 MPs voted in favor of his ouster, while only 44 members supported his retention. One MP abstained from the voting process.

The motion against him was introduced by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, who cited a total of 11 charges that led to the impeachment.

These accusations included gross violations of the constitution, undermining the authority of President William Ruto, as well as undermining devolution.

Additional allegations encompassed irregular acquisition of wealth, public attacks on a judge, intimidation of the acting CEO of KEMSA, promoting ethnic divisions, and acts of insubordination toward the President.

To proceed with the impeachment, a minimum of 233 votes were required in favor of the motion.
