“It pains me” – MP Jalang’o clarifies ‘Kisii witches’ remarks after backlash

Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, alias Jalang’o, has been forced to clarify his remarks during a political meeting in Kitutu Chache North, Kisii County, on Sunday, April 27.

During the rally that was led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, the first-time legislator made remarks that border on a “witches meeting” in a bid to laud the area MP, Japheth Nyakundi, for connecting electricity to locals.

The comedian-cum-politician said that he spent the night at Marani Simba Lodge on Saturday, and during the night, he witnessed a meeting of around 10 witches. In the imaginary meeting, Jalango said that the witches were lamenting how MP Nyakundi had made their business untenable.

A section of Kenyans on social media took issues with Jalango’s remarks, demanding an apology.

“I have seen the reports about what was said during my visit to Kisii yesterday, and I am deeply hurt by the way my words have been misrepresented,” Jalango said. “It pains me to hear that anyone would think I would ever insult or look down upon the Kisii community. That is simply not who I am.”

The MP said that the Kisii people are not only his friends, but also his colleagues, neighbors and family. “I have worked alongside them, shared meals with them, and celebrated with them. I would never allow profiling or disrespect to come from my mouth or my heart.”

He added: “Please, I ask you to take a moment to watch the full clip and understand the true context. Let us not let falsehoods sow division between people who have always stood together. I value and respect the Kisii community deeply, today and always.”
