Jahmby Koikai: Media personality passes away after long battle with endometriosis

Reggae entertainer and health advocate Mary Jahmby Koikai, popularly known as Fayah Mama, has passed away.

Koikai had been battling endometriosis, a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing severe pain and complications that had significantly impacted her life and career.

Most recently, in May 2024, Koikai revealed she was admitted to the Pioneer Ward at Nairobi Hospital. She shared a heartfelt appeal, revealing her need for blood and asking anyone who could help her to come forward.

“Hi fam, I’m currently admitted at the Pioneer Ward Nairobi Hospital and I kindly require Blood O positive. Kindly asking for blood donors for Mary Njambi Koikai,” she wrote on her Instagram stories.

Her death has sent shockwaves through the media and entertainment circles, where she was a well-known and respected figure.

Koikai’s journey with endometriosis began at the age of 13, when she first experienced severe period pains. She initially thought it was a normal part of menstruation, but as years went by, the pain only intensified.

Her condition worsened, leading to a series of pneumothoraxes (collapsed lungs) caused by thoracic endometriosis, a rare manifestation of the disease. This led to numerous surgeries and prolonged hospital stays, which Koikai sought to address by seeking specialized care abroad.

Advocate for women’s health

Throughout her battle, Koikai became a fierce advocate for women’s health, courageously sharing her journey on social media to raise awareness about endometriosis.

Her story inspired many, and she became a beacon of hope for those struggling with the condition. Koikai’s advocacy work also highlighted the need for better medical care and support for women suffering from endometriosis in Kenya.

Koikai’s health had significantly improved after undergoing treatment in the USA, where she underwent 21 surgeries. Despite her improved health, her passing is a devastating loss to her fans and the media community.

Her legacy will continue to inspire and educate others about the importance of endometriosis awareness and the need for better medical care and support for those affected by the condition.
