Samuel Kariuki Mwangi alias Wangomo, the suspect who killed two men in Chui village, Mathioya Constituency, was on Friday, April 5 arraigned in Murang’a Law Courts but was not charged with murder.
Kariuki was presented before Senior Resident Magistrate Erick Musambai after having been arrested at Gilgil in Nakuru County where he had secured a job as a butcher and was being hosted by a woman.
DCI officer Wilson Nyaga sought the court to grant them 21 days to hold the suspect inorder to complete investigations.
Nyaga said they will have to conduct DNA tests from the suspect, and a mental assessment conducted.
Investigations are still ongoing to find out how he got to Gilgil and attaining employment as a butcher.
Murder suspect’s demeanour
Before the court process commenced, the suspect seemed jovial, telling stories from those with him at the bar to the prison officers standing near him, and to some extent he was seen extending his hands in cuffs touching one of the officers in a manner seeking to capture his attention.
In his ruling, the magistrate agreed with the suspect who had sort to have the DCI conduct investigations in 14 days and not the requested 21 days. In doing so, the magistrate referred to concerns by the prosecution led by Shadrack Kagema, that the life of the suspect was in danger since the residents from Chui village were baying for his blood.
Outside the court, family members of the suspect shocked journalists when they said they are ready to bury him because of the problems he has caused the village.
The residents from the village who also attended the court session said they had come to confirm if in deed the suspect is the one presented before court, and called on the investigating officers to do thorough and firm investigations to ensure that they have a strong case.
