Jamhuri Day: Kericho MCA Anita Pyegon advocates for GBV counseling centers

As Kenyans celebrate Jamhuri Day, a day of independence and a reflection of the ideals of justice and equality, the issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) took center stage in Kericho County.

Speaking at Getarwet Grounds on December 12, 2024 during the 61st Jamhuri Day , Kericho’s sole elected female MCA Anita Pyegon, delivered a compelling call to action, emphasizing that GBV remains a pressing challenge undermining the safety, dignity, and equality of individuals across the nation.

“Freedom from violence is a fundamental right,” she declared, underscoring the need for a collective effort to combat GBV.

Pyegon urged communities, government bodies, and stakeholders to enhance their commitment to eradicating the vice.

She advocated for robust community education programs and grassroots initiatives aimed at dismantling cultural norms and attitudes that perpetuate violence.

Highlighting the urgent need for survivor support, she called for the establishment of dedicated counseling centers within administrative hubs to provide victims with access to psychological support and justice.

While acknowledging Kenya’s progress in tackling GBV, including the implementation of the Sexual Offences Act, Pyegon pointed out persistent gaps.

According to the MCA, many survivors still face barriers to justice, including societal stigma, limited resources, and insufficient support systems.

Her remarks resonated with the spirit of Jamhuri Day, serving as a reminder that true independence is not only about political freedom but also about ensuring every citizen’s right to live free from violence and fear.
