Japan invests KSh1.85 billion to connect over 9,000 Kenyan households to electricity

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has committed KSh1.85 billion to support the fifth phase of the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP) in Kenya.

This funding will enable the connection of 9,121 households across the counties of Nakuru, Kilifi, Kwale, and Nyandarua, marking a significant step towards enhancing electricity access in these regions.

This announcement comes shortly after Kenya Power signed 26 contracts for the fourth phase of the LMCP, which boasts a budget of KSh27 billion and is backed by the French Development Agency, the European Union, and the European Investment Bank.

The fourth phase aims to connect an impressive 280,000 new customers to the national grid by November 2025, further expanding the reach of electricity across the country.

Launched in 2013, the Last Mile Connectivity Project has been pivotal in Kenya’s efforts to increase electricity access. With a total investment of KSh73.1 billion across its initial phases, the project has successfully connected 746,867 households since it began operations officially in 2015, significantly improving the quality of life for many Kenyans and contributing to the nation’s development goals.

Kenya Power, the organization responsible for implementing this ambitious project, has established a vast network of transmission and distribution lines that spans over 306,000 kilometers. As of May 2024, the utility company serves more than 9.62 million customers, ensuring that approximately 76% of the population has access to electricity—a crucial factor for economic growth and community empowerment.

With Jica’s recent funding, Kenya is one step closer to achieving its goal of universal electricity access by 2030. The continued expansion of the Last Mile Connectivity Project is essential for fostering economic opportunities and improving living standards, ultimately empowering households and businesses throughout the nation.
