Former Chelsea and current Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho paid a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
Mourinho praised the late pontiff for his humility, kindness toward humanity, and his connection to the sport of football. In an Instagram post, Mourinho reflected on the Pope’s greatness being rooted in humility, stating:
“To be great, above all it is necessary to know how to be small. Humility is the basis of true greatness.Pope Francis Hope is a light in the night. Great Pope.”
He acknowledged Pope Francis’s impact not only as a religious leader but also as a figure who welcomed some of football’s greatest stars, including Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Gianluigi Buffon, at the Vatican, signing memorabilia and showing support for the sport.
Pope Francis had been battling severe health issues, including bilateral pneumonia and respiratory insufficiency, requiring high-flow supplemental oxygen and noninvasive mechanical ventilation.
Despite his frailty, he made a significant public appearance on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, greeting worshippers from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica while seated in a wheelchair, symbolizing resilience and dedication.
The Vatican announced that Pope Francis will forego the traditional centuries-old practice of burial in three interlocking caskets made of oak, cypress, and lead, marking a departure from previous papal burial customs.
Mourinho’s tribute reflects the widespread respect and admiration Pope Francis earned across different communities, including the global football fraternity, for his humility, compassion, and universal love.
